If You Want to Succeed, WORK ON YOUR SKILL DEVELOPMENT

If you are not honing your craft and ensuring that you and your team are providing the BEST possible service/product (as a result of ongoing skill development) you cannot win.

Because you are reading this, I know you are special, in that you DO want to be better. You are already way ahead of 99% of the world. I want you to continue to work on your leadership, your business know-how, and also your craft.

There are three major ways I want you to improve skills in your organization. And of course, you MUST SCHEDULE THESE into your calendars, if you really want them to happen!

  1. BOOK YOUR OWN SKILL DEVELOPMENT at minimum once a month. If you spend ONE HOUR PER MONTH getting better at providing your service or product, you will leapfrog over most of your competitors. If you spend one hour per week, you will be even more impressed with your results. And as Brian Tracy notes, if you spend one hour per day studying, you’ll be “at the top of your field within three years.”
  2. Ensure employees have a say in their career path and skill development. Give your employees the chance to participate in choosing their skill development/courses. Encourage them and provide incentives to further their education, especially where it will help you achieve your company goals.
  3. Do team development sessions. Make sure you also schedule skill development sessions for the entire team (or department). You want to create a team mentality and a deep commitment to EVERYONE improving. This should be a part of your culture, and something everyone is on board with. If they’re not on board, you may not have been listening to them. Try again.

Many grants are available for training and skill development in most locations! This means you can even recover the cost of your training and save your company some money!

Here is a helpful link for grants (for employee training) if you are in Alberta: https://www.alberta.ca/canada-alberta-job-grant.aspx

Make sure to book your skill development this week, it is DEFINITELY one of your most valuable activities!
